Updating the "Nike Ad" thread: (original post)
While I haven't yet been able to get in contact with a real person, leaving a message once again for the VP of Corporate Responsibility, I did receive an email response, printed below:
Thank you for contacting Nike regarding the Vince Carter Ad.
We welcome constructive comments concerning our advertising and appreciate that you took the time to contact us.
We will forward your comments to our Advertising Department for their consideration. Consumer observations do have a vital impact on our market research and marketing techniques.
Thanks again for contacting Nike.
My reply is as follows:
Thank you for getting back to me. While I'm happy that you're forwarding these thoughts to your advertising department, I do wish to know that you'll be informing me regarding the company's decisions.
I am not a "safety nut." In general I prefer that people be held accountable for their own actions, whatever the consequences. I am, however, an orthopaedic surgeon, and I do not wish to see children from age 6-14 harmed by trying to imitate something that looks like fun but is in reality extremely dangerous. I have three children of my own, and I know that they often try things that an adult's common sense would tell them to avoid.
At any rate, I look forward to hearing from you on this matter in the near future. I have a weblog, Joust The Facts, on which I've posted my thoughts, and a number of readers are interested in what, if any, action is taken.
The wheels turn slowly, indeed.
