Doesn't Senator Reid know that principle? If he doesn't, it's really a wonder he's gotten as far as he has, and it speaks poorly for the Democrats in the Senate that he is their leader.
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Sunday that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should apologize for the actions of their aides in the CIA leak case.
Reid, D-Nev., also said Bush should pledge not to pardon any aides convicted as a result of the investigation into the disclosure of CIA officer Valerie Plame's identity.
"There has not been an apology to the American people for this obvious problem in the White House," Reid said. He said Bush and Cheney "should come clean with the American public."
Reid added, "This has gotten way out of hand, and the American people deserve better than this."
What obvious problem? Come clean with the American public? What has gotten out of hand? Alleged lying to investigators, or are you referring to something more nefarious for which no one was charged.
"I think Karl Rove should step down," Reid said. "Here is a man who the president said if he was involved, if anyone in the administration was involved, out they would go."
That's not actually what Mr. Bush said, but Mr. Reid never lets the truth get in the way of a good soundbite. With fellow Democratic Senators Feingold and Kennedy in favor of pre-emptive surrender in Iraq, I can understand how Mr. Reid thinks pre-emptive surrender is a viable option for Karl Rove, but shouldn't Rove wait for Fitzgerald to actually charge him with something?
Maybe Mr. Reid had this speech pre-written, anticipating that both Libby and Rove would be charged, and that the charges would be for "outing" the "covert" CIA agent. Apparently his aides put something to say in his hands without editing the content to fit the actual facts. Senator Reid should bone up on the facts of the case.
Wait a minute, he's a Senator. He should already know them.
