Ministry Of CIA Mole Links
You may have heard that a CIA "analyst" was identified as the leaker of classified information to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, information that dealt with "secret CIA prisons" in Europe that probably don't exist. I've been working today, and as a result haven't been as on top of the story as, well, everyone. But these people have.
- Lots of information at Rick Moran's place with lots of links. Just keep scrolling. Initially he was suspicious that a sting had been set up to nail the culprit, Mary McCarthy. Now he has backed off a little and is being guided by Occam's Razor.
- Ace of Spades fills in a few details that make Occam's Razor look a little more like a Gillette Fusion. Included in the post is the tidbit, via Tom Maguire, that the NY Times, in documenting Ms. McCarthy's donations to Democratic candidates overlooked some of them. Intentionally?
- Many interesting thoughts from Varifrank. A sort of "Top Ten" of unanswered questions, including these beauts:
8. What strikes me as most interesting about this case is that it appears that Dr. McCarthy has close working relationships with many people in the "anti-Bush" community and the Democrat party. Is this just a leak, or part of an attempt at a soft "coup"?
[...]
10. Now that we have reason to question the loyalty of Dr. McCarthy and that she served in the NSC with Sandy Berger, Just what was it that Sandy Berger was carrying in his pants out of the archive? Is it related to this?
But the potential consequences aside, leaking is a problem that has become too much a part of the beltway culture, and leaks during war time—which have become increasingly bold in their scope—are a real threat to our national security, and so simply can no longer be tolerated, even if it means that until both parties can learn to control their animus, careerists in the intel field are treated with distrust by the Administration in power, and potentially purged on partisan grounds.
Rather civil, Mr. Goldstein. It would clearly be better if these careerists could put their partisan thoughts aside and row with the administration, but if they can't they need to be removed. The CIA officials involved in such activity, among others, need to understand that they are not a fourth branch of government. Oversight of the Executive branch occurs via the Judicial and the Legislative branches.
Of course, the MSM is all for the leaks, which serve to undermine a Presidency that they feel is the "worst ever."
- To conclude, Kim Priestap at Wizbang runs down the defenses of Ms. McCarthy that are already showing up in the MSM. After all, there are good leaks and bad leaks. Good leaks are the ones that verify what you believe; bad ones contradict your beliefs. Note to the MSM - facts are facts, and you can't ignore the inconvenient ones when writing your stories.
Enough for now. More links and thoughts later as developments demand.
4/22/06 2210: Well, that was quick. Ace of Spades notes that defenders of Ms. McCarthy include Steven Simon. Yes, that Steven Simon.
