Blogland Quote Of The Day - Harriet Miers Edition

From Ed Morrissey at Captain's Quarters, in discussing the Bush administration's ineptitude in presenting and promoting Harriet Miers for SCOTUS:

Perhaps people haven't looked at her accomplishments because this White House has been completely inept at promoting them. We have heard about her work in cleaning up the Texas Lottery Commission, her status as the first woman to lead the Texas Bar Association, and her leadership as the managing partner of a large Texas law firm. Given that conservatives generally don't trust trial lawyers and the Bar Association and are at best ambivalent to government sponsorship of gambling, those sound rather weak as arguments for a nomination to the Supreme Court.

I'm still trying, in the midst of my busiest season of work, to sort through the nomination and the merits of Miers.  As I've said before, her conservatism, as the nominee of a conservative president, may be in question, but I'm not going to nitpick in that regard.  I assume the President who nominated her would have some knowledge of the substance of his choice.  I'm more concerned with her qualifications, including little if any background in Constitutional Law.  I'm more concerned with the appearance (again) of cronyism.  I'm quite sure I'd be shaking my head in dismay if, for example, President Clinton had nominated Vince Foster, Charles Ruff or David Kendall for a SCOTUS slot.

Do I know enough about Ms. Miers to make an informed decision at this point?  No.  But this is foreboding.

On the other hand, the White House venomous attacks, charging 'sexism' and 'elitism', against those who harbor doubts about Miers is downright discouraging.   I thought (not really, but it makes the point stronger) that only the left hurled invective, and only invective, to counter an argument.  It will not be due to sexism or elitism if, after considering the available information, I do not support the Miers nomination.  It will be because the facts do not support her.
