Citing his time-off, his time set aside for bicycling and exercise, and the need for more firewood at his ranch in Crawford, President Bush declined to respond to the needs of the desperate citizens of New Orleans and the low-lying delta region of Louisiana as the huge and potentially deadly hurricane Katrina approached.
By not taking a few crucial minutes away from his excessively-long vacation to declare a state of emergency in Louisiana, the President effectively blocked the area from receiving desperately needed federal FEMA funds and support. Democrats, such as House minority leader Nancy Pelosi immediately castigated the nation's chief executive as uncaring, obviously a man who "cannot relate to the struggles of the working class in America."
