Earlier I wrote about the Democrats in Massachusetts repeatedly embracing positions that are supported by only a minority of state residents. These included gay marriage, single-payor health care, state tax increases, and blocking charter school initiatives.
Another one, via Jay Tea at Wizbang, is a bill currently being debated that gives state tuition discounts to illegal alien residents of the state. He asks some pointed questions, to which I doubt the representatives involved have coherent answers.
Jay writes:
Mr. Lantigua explains his sympathies; he himself is an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, and has been a citizen for over 20 years.
That does not really explain his sympathies for illegal immigrants; Gov. Schwarzenegger has no similar sympathy for illegals.
Although the legislature is overwhelmingly Democratic, I doubt they'll override a veto if it gets that far. This proposal, even in Mass., couldn't possibly have more than 25-30% support (from legal residents).
