The Media Is Losing It

I noted two stories on Power Line this morning that indicated this.  First, the ABC news efforts to find an Iraq war casualty funeral to cover along with the inauguration.  ABC later pulled the story from the web.  Second was a post noting ridiculous bit of tripe written by Susan Lenfestey in the Minneapolis Star Tribune entitled "Some in black tie; others, body bags."  Herein you'll find such deep and thoughtful analysis as:

As the 9/11 widow tucks her children into bed, wondering why the recommendations made in "The 9/11 Commission Report" weren't implemented, Tom Ridge tightens his cummerbund.

As prisoners charged with no crimes, and given no recourse, languish in the hellhole of Guantanamo Bay, torture apologist Alberto Gonzales clicks his cufflinks into place.

Why doesn't she just write "Bush Lied, People Died" and be done with it?

Then this morning, although it doesn't rise to that level of pettiness, I saw an ABC News/Associated Press story entitled:

Senate Democrats Extract Promise From Rice

Oh, my goodness, they got to her!!  They made her realize the error of the administration's ways, and promise to do things differently.  Well, no, not exactly.

Senate Democrats extracted a promise from Condoleezza Rice to level with them when she takes over as secretary of state.

And Rice seems agreeable, to a point.

"We can certainly have, I think, a healthy debate about the course that we should take going forward," she said Wednesday in response to Democrats who criticized Bush's rationale for overthrowing Saddam Hussein and his handling of a postwar insurgency that is taking a growing toll of American soldiers in Iraq.

"I will be candid," Rice promised. "My assessments may not always be ones that you want to hear. They may not always be the ones with which you agree. But I will tell you what I think." (my emphasis)

And that, she said, "is a promise that I make to you today."

Rice coupled the promise with an admission that some Bush administration decisions in Iraq were bad ones, but she did not elaborate or give ground on the principal elements of the administration's policy there.

So what, precisely did the Senate Democrats "extract" from Rice?  A promise to be candid and discuss the policies?  What else did they expect?  This is "news?"

UPDATE: Power Line notes that ABC news did indeed pull the listing looking for a military funeral, but perhaps only because they found one.
